For over five decades the Vilnius String Quartet, a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize and Baltic Assembly Prize, has enjoyed the reputation of one of the leading collectives on Lithuanian cultural scene, gaining superlatives at home and abroad. Abundance of the Quartet’s intriguing and momentous programmes and concert series gather audience, cultivate it’s taste, introduce it to the masterpieces of quartet repertoire and opuses seldom heard in Lithuania as well as present seasoned and promising performers. Tonight the collective teams up with young talents: pianist Rokas Valuntonis, a winner of international competitions, London’s City Music Foundation artist, and double bassist Dainius Rudvalis, a member of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra. The two musicians will be heard in one of Mendelssohn’s most admired chamber works – Piano sextet in D major, Op. 110 for piano, violin, two violas, cello and double bass. Rich correlation of string and piano timbres, instrumental dialogues, playfulness, surges of lyricism and drama disclose the beauty of Mendelssohn’s creative genius. In addition, the Vilnius String Quartet offers Brahms’ String quartet No. 1, op. 51 in C minor. Regarded as a daring example of orchestral vocabulary it showcases links to Beethoven and Brahms’ adored Haydn.
